McMillan received the 2019 Award of Excellence from the National Garden Clubs. McMillan was nominated by The Garden Club of South Carolina for this award, which was given during the organization’s 90thannual convention in Biloxi, Mississippi, this month. Each year, the National Garden Clubs’ Award of Excellence recognizes exceptional individuals, organizations or institutions that advance its goals and purposes.

“The Award of Excellence is our organization’s highest honor for non-members and by recognizing these deserving recipients from different parts of the nation, the National Garden Club hopes to educate and inspire others in communities coast-to-coast,” said Gay Austin, president of National Garden Clubs.

On Tuesday (May 28), McMillan also was awarded the South Carolina Environmental Awareness Award. He received the award during a ceremony in the Environmental Education Center at Harbison State Forest. This award was established by the state Legislature in 1992 to recognize people for outstanding contributions to the protection, conservation and improvement of the state’s natural resources.

“I am extremely humbled and honored to be the recipient of the National Garden Clubs’ 2019 Award of Excellence and the South Carolina Environmental Awareness Award,” McMillan said. “It has been my pleasure to help advance the preservation of the natural and cultural resources that make South Carolina the state we all love and enjoy. I will continue to work to increase awareness and appreciation for our environment.”

Greg Yarrow, chairman of Clemson’s forestry and environmental conservation department, applauded McMillan for receiving these awards.

“Dr. McMillan is most deserving in being recognized for his work in receiving these prestigious awards,” Yarrow said. “His passion for and knowledge of the natural world and his ability to communicate to a wide variety of audiences has made a tremendous impact on conservation across South Carolina and beyond. We are fortunate to have such a talented faculty member in our department who contributes significantly to our teaching, research and outreach mission.”

McMillan also is director of the South Carolina Botanical Garden, as well as producer, host, writer, director and co-editor of the Emmy award-winning public television program “Expeditions with Patrick McMillan.” He also is the author or contributing author of several books. His research has been featured in a number of local, regional and national publications, including National Wildlife. McMillan also is a popular lecturer in the Southeast and around the nation, giving more than 100 public presentations annually.

He joins a list of past recipients of the South Carolina Environmental Awareness Award, including Rudy Mancke, host of “NatureNotes” on SCTV and South Carolina Public Radio; Frank Holleman, senior attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center; Whit Gibbons, professor emeritus of ecology, University of Georgia, and former head of the Environmental Outreach and Education program at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory; Brad Wyche, founder of Greenville-based conservation organization Upstate Forever; and Richard Porcher, conservationist and former biology professor at The Citadel.
