Clemson University students, faculty and staff now have free access to ChatGPT Edu. The secure, institutionally managed version of ChatGPT will expand generative AI capabilities for the University community, while protecting University information.
Available through Clemson’s partnership with OpenAI, the widespread University access supports the University’s AI Initiative — a cross-disciplinary effort to develop Clemson’s human-centered approach to artificial intelligence across education, research and operations. This partnership ensures University data is safeguarded and is not used to train AI systems outside the University environment.
Expanded access within the University-managed environment also ensures all University members have access to advanced AI tools, positioning them to lead and adapt in an increasingly AI-enabled workforce.
Account access
Students, faculty, staff and affiliates who wish to use Clemson’s ChatGPT Edu environment must request access by completing the ChatGPT Edu account request form. The system will automatically create accounts within an hour. After account creation, users will receive a welcome email from OpenAI and can log in to ChatGPT Edu using Clemson single sign-on.
For more than 20,000 Clemson users with existing ChatGPT accounts using their Clemson email address, access to the Edu environment is not automatic. Interested users must fill out the request form to access the platform and ensure Clemson data is secure. Existing users may choose to merge their current account or download their chat history and start with a new account.
Detailed instructions for creating and managing a Clemson ChatGPT Edu account are available on the Clemson AI website.
