Women’s History Month celebrated at Clemson

Clemson University has organized events throughout the month of March to celebrate the vital role of women in American history.

The scheduled events are:

March 5: Powerful Women in Industry speaker series, Mary Jo McCarthy

Noon – 1 p.m. in the Honors Center Great Hall located at Cribb and DesChamps halls. Sponsored by the Calhoun Honors College.

Mary Jo McCarthy is a retired engineer and was a senior executive with Procter & Gamble. She currently owns a consulting business specializing in supply chain, organization design and logistics.

March 7: Women’s Leadership Conference 2020: Nothing Less

9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Hendrix Student Center.

Hosted by Student Involvement and Leadership, this event began with students and staff who were passionate about women’s leadership. The annual conference has grown into an incredibly successful program that builds capacity and efficacy in leadership, giving conference attendees knowledge about issues in women’s leadership and knowledge, skills and values to engage in the leadership process.

March 9: Women’s Roundtable Lunch and Learn featuring keynote presentation by Adis Vila

Noon – 1:30 p.m. in the Hendrix Center meeting rooms. Hosted by the Division of Inclusion and Equity.

A certified diversity executive during President Obama’s presidency, Cuban-born Adis Vila was the first chief diversity officer at the U.S. Air Force Academy. For more than 30 years, Vila has held executive positions in business, government and higher education in general management, business development, policy development and implementation, government, public and regulatory affairs functions, and diversity and inclusion. A financial expert under SEC regulations and NYSE rules, Vila holds the highest corporate governance designation of Board Leadership Fellow from the National Association of Corporate Directors. In 2018, Vila was named by Hispanic Executive a Leading Latina and by Directors & Boards a Director to Watch.

March 9: “To be Young, Gifted, Black and Female”; A conversation with Delores K. Barton and Dorothy Ashford

4:30  – 5:30 p.m. in the Academic Success Center room 118.

Delores K. Barton and Dorothy Ashford are two of the first three African-American women to complete four-year degrees at Clemson.

Co-sponsored by the Clemson University Commission on the Black Experience, the Division of Inclusion and Equity and the Pearce Center for Professional Communication.

Dr. Paula T. Hammond

March 12: Distinguished Speaker Series, Dr. Paula T. Hammond

2  – 3 p.m. in the Watt Auditorium. Hosted by TIGERS Advance.

Dr. Paula T. Hammond is a David H. Koch Professor in Engineering and the Head of the department of chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  Her presentation is titled “Electrostatic assembly for nanoparticle targeting of cells and tissues.” Her visit is sponsored by Eric Davis of the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering.

March 12: Powerful Women in Industry speaker series, Suzanne Aultman

Noon – 1 p.m. in the Honors Center Great Hall located at Cribb and DesChamps Halls. Sponsored by the Calhoun Honors College.

Suzanne Aultman a Clemson alumna, a licensed professional engineer and the technical manager for Metromont Corporation in Greenville.

March 24: Film showing, “Booksmart”

6:30 – 9:30 p.m. in McKissick Theater.  Sponsored by the Women’s Celebration Month committee in partnership with TigerLive.

Enjoy a showing of the film “Booksmart” and engage in a dialogue after the film to discuss the power of women friendships.

This event is free and open to public.

March 25: Creating your own Identity workshop

Noon – 1:30 p.m. in the Cooper Library Brown Room. Sponsored by the Women’s Celebration Month committee.

Come to discuss and engage in meaningful dialogue on what it means to create your identity as a woman.

March 26: Powerful Women in Industry speaker series, Stephanie Dykes

Noon – 1 p.m. in the Honors Center Great Hall located at Cribb and DesChamps Halls. Sponsored by the Calhoun Honors College.

Stephanie Dykes is a Clemson alumna, has more than 30 years of experience working in education and business as well as experience in institutional and marketing research. Dykes will talk about her Clemson experience, educational journey and inspiring life story as a trans woman.

March 26: Powerful Women in Industry speaker series, Dr. Shannelle Campbell

Noon – 1 p.m. in the Honors Center Great Hall located at Cribb and DesChamps Halls. Sponsored by the Calhoun Honors College.

Dr. Shannelle Campbell is a Clemson Honors alumna who received her M.D. and Master of Public Health degree from Yale University. She currently serves as an assistant professor in the Division of General and Acute Care Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

MSU Plant Research Lab, Beronda Montgomery

March 30: Distinguished Speaker Series, Beronda L. Montgomery

3:30 – 4:45 p.m. in the Watt Auditorium. Hosted by TIGERS Advance.

Beronda L. Montgomery, Foundation Professor at Michigan State University in the departments of biochemistry and molecular biology and microbiology and molecular genetics, will present her seminar “Moving From Deficits to Possibilities: Supporting Growth and Success in STEM” as part of Clemson’s 2020 Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS) sponsored by the Clemson University Graduate Student Association.
