Clemson University and the City of Walhalla continue to evaluate the cause and extent of a sinkhole located at the northern end of Stumphouse Tunnel. While the depth and extent of the sinkhole are not fully known at this time, Clemson University has engaged third-party engineering professionals to conduct testing of both the tunnel and the surrounding areas.
Public access to Stumphouse Tunnel will remain closed through Friday pending the results of the preliminary examination of the area by third-party engineers. The tunnel entrance closure is precautionary and expected to be temporary and limited in duration. Other areas of Stumphouse Mountain Park, including bike trails and Issaqueena Falls, are expected to remain unaffected and will be open during normal operating hours.
Clemson owns the property and has leased the tunnel and adjacent property to the City of Walhalla for a number of years. The two parties recently continued their collaboration by entering into a new 25-year lease for Stumphouse Tunnel through August 31, 2049.
More information will be provided when available, and Clemson and the City are working in concert to fully assess the situation, determine how best to secure and stabilize the property, and taking appropriate steps to ensure the safety of anyone who may be near or may come near the sinkhole area.
