Clemson University recognized its May and August doctoral and master’s degree graduates in two ceremonies November 15 at Greenville’s Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
Among those receiving degrees at the Doctoral Hooding Ceremony were graduates from the May doctoral class – the largest-ever at 97. Another 72 comprised the August class, including five who received Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees.
Earlier in the day, the University honored 1,338 master’s and specialist’s degree recipients from May and August.
“Being there and seeing how meaningful the ceremony was for the graduates, even with all the adjustments we had to make due to COVID, made me very proud that Clemson chose to have this in-person ceremony as an option for our graduates,” said John Lopes, associate provost and dean of the Graduate School. “We’re looking forward to doing the same thing for our December graduates.”
One of the highlights of the doctoral hooding ceremony was the distribution of a special-issue lapel pin for 2020 doctoral graduates. It features the Block-C logo that was in use in 1955 when Clemson began offering its first doctoral degree and three chevron stripes like the ones on every graduating doctoral student’s regalia sleeves.
“We wanted to do something to recognize the extra challenges faced by this doctoral class, and we thought this lapel pin with the year included would be a reminder the graduates could be proud of,” Lopes said.
