CUPD: Be vigilant to avoid drink spiking

Share:

The Clemson University Police Department (CUPD) is aware of information circulating on social media about potential drink spiking in the downtown area. The Clemson City Police Department is investigating the matter.

CUPD wants to remind the University community to be vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times. Be an active bystander and if you see something, say something! Look out for your friends and ask them to look out for you. You can play a powerful role in helping other people stay safe.

If you plan to go out, whether to a party or a restaurant or bar, follow these safety tips if you or your friends choose to drink:

  • Always buy your own drink and watch it being poured.
  • Don’t accept drinks from strangers. If someone offers to get you a drink from a bar or at a party, go with the person to order your drink. Watch your drink as it is poured and carry it yourself.
  • Never leave your drink unattended while you dance or go to the bathroom.
  • Don’t drink or taste anyone else’s drink.
  • Throw your drink away if you think it tastes strange or different.
  • Be aware of drinks in punch bowls or other containers that can be easily “spiked”.
  • Get help right away if you feel drunk and haven’t had any alcohol or if you feel like the effects of drinking alcohol are stronger than usual. Find a friend who can help you get to a safe place.
  • If a friend seems out of it, seems much too drunk for the amount of alcohol they consumed, is acting out of character, or seems too drunk to stay safe in general, get them to a safe place. Ask your friends to do the same for you.

If you or a friend has an emergency or needs immediate assistance, call 911 or text 911 if you are unable to call. You can report suspected drink spiking by calling CUPD at 864-656-2222 for on-campus incidents or Clemson City Police Department at 864-624-2000 for incidents occurring in the city.
