Class of 1976 Celebrates Golden Anniversary with Impactful Gift to Clemson University

Current News

As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, Clemson University’s Class of 1976 has marked its own historic milestone by presenting an impactful gift that honors both the University’s heritage and its future.

Members of the Class of 1976 presented a combined class gift totaling $775,414.58, supporting the newly established Class of 1976 Golden Anniversary Scholarship Endowment and the installation of a new flagpole at the Nieri Family Alumni and Visitors Center. The gift was unveiled during the Golden Tiger Reunion and induction ceremony, hosted by the Clemson Alumni Association (CAA). Through its Golden Tiger program, CAA celebrates alumni reaching the 50th anniversary of their graduation and formally welcomes them into the Golden Tiger Society.

During the event, members of the Class of 1976 were recognized for their lasting contributions to Clemson and celebrated a remarkable legacy of philanthropy, with cumulative class giving exceeding $76.7 million since graduation. The new flagpole, dedicated June 4, stands prominently in front of the Nieri Family Alumni and Visitors Center and flies the American flag, the South Carolina flag and the Clemson Alumni flag. Class leaders described the installation as both a tribute to America’s upcoming 250th birthday and a lasting symbol of Clemson’s military heritage and alumni legacy.

“Just as we made history when we graduated during our nation’s 200th anniversary, we are making history again today by becoming Golden Tigers in America’s 250th year,” said Reggie Foster, Class of 1976 Student Government President, who spoke on behalf of the Class of 1976 Reunion Committee. “This flagpole serves as a symbol of Clemson’s military heritage and the legacy of the Class of 1976.”

Brian O’Rourke ‘83 ‘85, Clemson’s Senior Vice President for Advancement, said the class’s generosity reflects the enduring commitment of Clemson alumni to future generations of students.

“When we think about what moves Clemson Fiercely Forward, it comes down to people who believe deeply in this University and who choose to invest in its future in meaningful, lasting ways,” O’Rourke said. “Your gifts supporting the Class of 1976 scholarship, and the flagpole outside the Nieri Family Alumni and Visitors Center, directly impact the success of our most ambitious campaign yet. Every gift, including yours from the Class of 1976, will continue to elevate the Clemson Experience for the generations of students who will carry it forward.”

Wil Brasington ‘00, Chief Executive Officer of the Clemson Alumni Association, said the Class of 1976 exemplifies the lasting impact alumni can have on their alma mater.

“Today, we celebrate the years you spent on campus making a difference in both your own future and the future of Clemson,” Brasington said during the Alumni Association’s Golden Tiger induction ceremony. “As Golden Tigers, you now take your well-deserved place in Clemson’s history and leave a new mark on this campus and on the lives of past, current and future members of the Clemson Family. It is because of people like the members of the Class of 1976 that Clemson is the great place we all know and love.

The Class of 1976 holds a unique place in Clemson history. Graduating during America’s Bicentennial year, its members wore miniature Liberty Bells on their graduation tassels to commemorate the occasion. Fifty years later, as the nation prepares to celebrate its semiquincentennial, the class has once again connected its Clemson story to a significant moment in American history, complete with duplicates of those miniature Liberty Bells.

Their Golden Anniversary gift ensures that future students will benefit from scholarship support while visitors to campus are welcomed by a visible reminder of Clemson’s commitment to patriotism, service and lifelong connection to the University.

For the members of the Class of 1976, the gift is a testament to the enduring bonds formed at Clemson and a legacy that will continue to shape the University for generations to come.
