The newly released Privacy Policy establishes guiding privacy principles for the protection of personally identifiable information entrusted to the University and promotes the cultivation of a culture that values the protection of privacy as an integral part of daily interactions with members of the University community.

“This is Data Privacy Week,” said Clemson University’s Chief Privacy Officer Theo Wills. “At the root of information privacy is enabling individuals to control what happens to their information. Two questions I want everyone to ask themselves this week are what measures can I take to ensure information privacy in my work life and what can I do to secure information privacy in my personal life?”

The newly released Privacy Policy establishes guiding privacy principles for the protection of personally identifiable information entrusted to the University and promotes the cultivation of a culture valuing the protection of privacy as an integral part of daily interactions with members of the University community. The privacy principles fundamentally support and may be supplemented by applicable state, federal and regulatory requirements. Following are the four privacy principles:

  • Limitation – If you don’t need the data for a University mission or operation, don’t collect it.
  • Accountability – Train employees and affiliates how to protect data and monitor adherence to the privacy principles.
  • Transparency – Be clear and concise with individuals when communicating how their information will be managed, and to third parties about how they must protect University information.
  • Proactive Due Diligence – Regularly Identify, assess and mitigate privacy risks.

Training and tools are forthcoming to assist departments in deploying this policy.

Here are some ways you can take control of your personal privacy.
