Clemson University and the United Way of Pickens County continue impactful partnership

Our Clemson

You may know that the United Way of Pickens County and Clemson University hold an annual fundraising campaign every fall, but did you know the partnership runs all year long? This spring, Clemson faculty, staff and students have both contributed to and benefited from United Way initiatives that make a tangible difference in the lives of our neighbors.

Free File tax preparation

Free File is a free tax preparation service offered by United Way. Through March 25, trained and IRS-certified volunteers with United Way of Pickens County helped prepare and file nearly 1,500 2026 tax returns, including more than 200 at Clemson University. A new partnership between Clemson University Graduate Student Government has expanded the reach of the Free File program to Clemson’s graduate students, who often face a unique set of financial challenges and may be filing for the first time. Through free filing events at Clemson locations, more than 40 students were able to receive one-on-one guidance from certified tax volunteers. Additionally, six GSG students also joined as Free File volunteers, assisting with intake and tax preparation.

Graduate student Liz Bagatini has volunteered with the program since 2024, when Clemson and the United Way began partnering on Free File.

“As a graduate student, I know firsthand how challenging the tax filing process can be,” she said. “I have had the chance to meet community members from many different walks of life as a volunteer, and those connections have been unexpected gifts. This program makes a real difference, and I am proud to be a part of it.”

Clemson Chair Academy service project

Recently, the Clemson Chair Academy joined United Way of Pickens County to assemble more than 150 hygiene kits for residents across Pickens, Oconee and Anderson counties.

“Leadership is not defined by titles, but by service,” said Tia Dumas, Clemson University associate vice president for strategic alliances. “Clemson’s academic leaders demonstrated this by stepping beyond their formal roles to meet real, immediate community needs, showing that even small acts, done together, can create lasting impact and hope.”

Furthering the partnership and how you can help

In addition to Free File and service projects, Clemson University supports the United Way’s financial stability and education efforts through several initiatives:

  • Call Me MISTER students volunteer at Camp iRock, the Pickens UW summer reading program that helps children improve their reading abilities in an enriching summer camp environment.
  • Clemson Athletics partners with the United Way’s Champions for Literacy program, where Clemson student-athletes connect with young readers through volunteer opportunities that encourage reading and academic success.
  • The Clemson University workplace campaign takes place annually in the fall, which has raised at least $100,000 for United Way of Pickens County every year.

You can help support the United Way by donating via cash, check, credit card or (most recommended) payroll deduction by visiting the United Way of Pickens County website. If you have donated via payroll deduction previously, your donation will roll over this year and no action is necessary. If you wish to increase your donation amount, you can do so through the link.
