An overview of the establishment and management of silvopastures in South Carolina
Agricultural professionals, landowners and researchers will get the latest research-based information during the 2025 Silvopasture Field Day on Sept. 17 at the Edisto REC, 64 Research Road, Blackville, South Carolina 29817.
The field day focuses on establishing and managing silvopastures in South Carolina. Information will provide attendees with practical insights into integrating trees, forage and livestock for sustainable land use.
The field day kicks off with registration, poster viewing and a meet-and-greet session at 8:30 a.m. John Andrae, Edisto Research and Education Center director, will deliver the opening remarks at 9 a.m., setting the stage for a series of expert-led and graduate students’ presentations on ongoing research efforts.
What to expect
Indoor presentations
Silvopasture system design and tree selection
9:05 a.m. – Janet Steele and Derrick Phinney will discuss various system types and best practices for establishment and management.
Forage and livestock integration
9:40 a.m. – Liliane Silva will explore strategies for successful forage establishment and livestock incorporation.
Ecosystem services and economic considerations
10 a.m. – Presentations will highlight the environmental benefits and financial viability of silvopasture systems.
Graduate student research updates
The morning will also feature ongoing research updates from graduate students, Hannah Malcomson and Gafar Agunbiade, who will present their latest findings and showcase their work through posters.
Field tour
11 a.m. – Following a short break, attendees will embark on a guided field tour, offering a hands-on look at silvopasture practices in action.
Noon – Field day concludes.
