Ten faculty members honored for teaching, research, mentoring, leadership and collaboration

The College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences honored 10 faculty members on Sept. 15 for their contributions in teaching, research, mentoring, leadership and collaboration.

Those honored were Daniel Wilson, Nigel Kaye, Michael Kiernan, Cheng Sun, Jessica Larsen, Yuhao Xu, Kapil Chalil Madathil, Nathan McNeese, Todd Schweisinger and Mik Carbajales-Dale.

“Congratulations to each of this year’s honorees,” Dean Anand Gramopadhye said. “Their dedication to our students, their scholarship and their service make our college stronger and extend Clemson’s impact far beyond campus. Their awards are well deserved.”

Winners were announced by O. Thompson Mefford, associate dean for undergraduate studies.

Byars Prize for Excellence in Teaching Engineering Fundamentals
Winner: Daniel Wilson, lecturer, mechanical engineering
About the award: Recognizes excellence in teaching engineering fundamentals

Murray Stokely Award for Excellence in Teaching
Winner: Nigel Kaye, professor, civil engineering
About the award: Honors faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching engineering at the undergraduate and/or graduate level

Junior Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching
Winner: Michael Kiernan, lecturer, general engineering
About the award: Reserved for faculty with fewer than seven years in higher education, recognizing recent impact on student learning

Filipi Research Excellence Award
Winner: Cheng Sun, associate professor, mechanical engineering
About the award: Established in 2025, named for retired professor Zoran Filipi, recognizes sustained research excellence and long-term impact

McQueen Quattlebaum Faculty Achievement Award
Winner: Jessica Larsen, Carol and John Cromer ’63 Family Endowed Associate Professor, chemical and biomolecular engineering
About the award: Recognizes faculty accomplishments in the preceding year and distinctions and awards over the past three years

Junior Researcher of the Year
Winner: Yuhao Xu, assistant professor, mechanical engineering
About the award: Honors faculty within 10 years of their terminal degree who have made exemplary research contributions

Collaboration Award
Winners: Kapil Chalil Madathil, Wilfred P. Tiencken Professor of Industrial and Civil Engineering, and Nathan McNeese, McQueen Quattlebaum Endowed Professor, School of Computing
About the award: Recognizes two or more faculty whose collaboration in research or teaching has made notable contributions to the college

Esin Gulari Leadership and Service Award
Winner: Todd Schweisinger, principal lecturer, mechanical engineering
About the award: Recognizes faculty who undertake leadership and service roles requiring selfless commitment of time and effort

Mentoring Award
Winner: Mik Carbajales-Dale, professor, environmental engineering and Earth sciences
About the award: Honors faculty who enrich the Clemson experience for both students and colleagues through outstanding mentoring
