Professor Zeki Simsek, Gressette Chair of Business Strategy and Planning in the College of Business, has been appointed incoming senior associate editor at the Journal of Management. Simsek will begin his four-year term on July 1, 2020, while balancing research and teaching duties in the Department of Management.
“This is a tremendous honor for the Department of Management and for Zeki personally,” said Craig Wallace, management chair. “Serving a premier management publication in this role gives the department and College of Business tremendous visibility within the academic and practice communities, nationally and internationally.”
The Journal of Management is among the world’s most prestigious academic journals, ranking in the Financial Times’ Top 50 business school journals. The publication receives an estimated 1,200 manuscripts annually with an acceptance rate of about 8 percent. The journal is ranked fourth, by citation index, out of 140 in business-school journals.
Simsek, who joined the management faculty in 2016, said the appointment also bodes well for the Ph.D. program, the stature of the college and Department of Management.
“It will have a positive effect on our Ph.D. program when we recruit the best doctoral students and place them at peer or aspirational programs across the globe,” he said. “This is another example of the growing eminence of the college. Through the leadership of Dean (Wendy) York and Craig Wallace, we have added new programs, facilities and people that will enhance our global reputation. Adding a key role at a top-tier business journal will only add to the college’s growing reputation.”
Beyond the Journal of Management, Simsek – an expert in strategic leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship — has also regularly published in such premier outlets as the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Journal of Management Studies, among others.
The New England Journal of Entrepreneurship in 2016 recognized Simsek as one of the most influential authors globally in entrepreneurship research in the 21st century as a result of his research output in top-tier management journals from 2000 to 2015.
A recent analysis measuring scholarly impact in management education in the Academy of Management Learning and Education put Simsek in the top 1.6 percent out of more than 6,325 authors in the area of strategic management. In 2019, he was also awarded a lifetime appointment to the Clemson University URSAAA Society for significant achievement in research.
Simsek teaches a strategic management course in the MBA program, and a Ph.D. seminar in strategic management. He is chair of the Department of Management TPR Committee and has held numerous departmental, school and university-level committees and faculty council positions during his career.
He brings considerable editorial experience to the job, having served the past 10 years on the editorial review boards of several top management journals, including the Academy of Management Journal where he is finishing his term as associate editor.
