Todd Barnette, chief facilities officer, has announced he will retire from Clemson University after 28 years of service to Clemson and more than 38 years of service to the state of South Carolina.

Barnette has served as chief facilities officer since 2016, providing leadership for the teams responsible for planning, maintaining and caring for the University’s buildings, infrastructure and grounds. Before assuming his current role, he served for 18 years as the business officer for University Facilities.

Throughout his tenure at Clemson, Barnette has helped guide the planning and stewardship of Clemson’s campus in support of the University’s mission. His leadership has included facilities operations, along with planning, space management, capital projects, construction and renovation, to ensure the University’s facilities are positioned to meet both current and long-term needs.

Reflecting on his time at Clemson, Barnette expressed immense admiration and respect for the University Facilities’ team and the work they do to support Clemson in all capacities.

“I have been truly blessed through my faith, my family and the family of University Facilities that I have been privileged to represent these last ten years,” said Barnette.

Barnette’s Clemson connections extend beyond his professional career. A Clemson graduate, Barnette’s father worked for the University for nearly 30 years and he met his wife while working at the University bookstore. Their two sons both graduated from Clemson and married fellow Clemson graduates.

Following Barnette’s retirement, Laura Stoner, associate vice president for real estate strategy and operations, will serve as interim chief facilities officer.

Keith Martin has also accepted the interim role of Director of Facilities Services. Working closely with Stoner, Martin will provide leadership and strategic direction for the operations of Maintenance Services, Landscape Services, Custodial and Recycling Services, and Support Services.

University faculty and staff are invited to attend a drop-in retirement reception for Barnette on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 3 to 4:30pm at The Common Ground, University Maintenance Shops (834 Delta Row Drive Seneca, SC 29634).
