Scholar on African-American athletes and civil rights will speak at Clemson

CLEMSON — George Mason University scholar and author David Wiggins will be at Clemson University Wednesday to talk about African-American athletes and their involvement in the civil rights movement.

His talk, “An Altered Athletic Landscape: Sport, Race and the Civil Rights Movement,” will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts. It is presented the Robert H. Brooks Sports Science Institute at Clemson.

Wiggins is professor emeritus of sports studies and co-director of the Center for the Study of Sport and Leisure in Society at George Mason. Wiggins has held numerous positions in professional organizations and published many articles and books, including “More Than a Game: A History of African-American Athletes during the Civil Rights Movement.”

The Robert H. Brooks Sports Science Institute at Clemson University serves as a multidisciplinary platform for the academic study of sport sciences across the university. Through the foundation of four Legacy Professors in motorsports engineering, sports communication, sports management and sports marketing, the institute will define, enhance and promote the role of sports in academia and society.
