Robert Tamura has been named the interim chair of the John E. Walker Department of Economics at Clemson’s Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business.

Tamura joined Clemson’s academic community in 1996, initially serving as a visiting associate professor before becoming an associate professor in 1997 and a professor in 2006. Over his tenure, he has been distinguished in the economics field for his academic excellence.

Among his many achievements, Tamura is recognized by RePEc.org for ranking in the top 4% of economists worldwide. He is also ranked #4 out of 90 economists in South Carolina and #212 out of 4409 economists in the South Atlantic States.

“Tamura is a distinguished researcher, teacher and mentor,” says Scott Baier, acting associate dean of research and the previous economic department chair. “In his new role, Robert will work to ensure that our students have the skills to adapt to the quickly evolving business landscape and that our faculty and graduate students receive support in the classroom and in their research.”

Before joining Clemson, Tamura earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago in 1988. Tamura was an assistant professor at the University of Iowa from 1988 to 1996. He was also a Research Fellow with the National Bureau of Economic Research from 1989 to 1993 and a John Stauffer National Fellow of Public Policy at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution from 1993 to 1994.

Tamura’s career also includes roles as a Visiting Scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta (1997-2012) and as the William E. Simon Distinguished Visiting Professor at the School of Public Policy at Pepperdine University in 2011.

As interim department chair, Tamura is looking forward to taking on his new role. “I am humbled by the opportunity to continue the tradition of outstanding leadership provided by the past department Chairs including Gerald P. Dwyer, Bill Dougan, Skip Sauer and Scott Baier. I will strive to assist the faculty and staff of the John E. Walker Department of Economics in their provision of quality undergraduate and graduate education to our students and producing frontier economic research.”
