Clemson University has introduced a new Research Information Security Policy to safeguard the responsible and lawful collection, storage and transmission of data obtained through research.
The University policy, which takes effect immediately, applies to all employees and students – as well as contractors, contingent workers and affiliates when sponsor agreements require – and requires the use of University-approved systems, facilities and methods to securely manage regulated research data.
These requirements protect the confidentiality and integrity of regulated data and intellectual capital, ensure responsible management of U.S. taxpayer dollars and help maintain a secure environment that fosters research discoveries and innovation.
Data-management requirements may vary by funding agency or sponsor. The Office of Export Compliance and Research Security will serve as the Research Information Security Policy program office to provide training and consultation on risks and mitigation. For questions, please contact the Office of Export Compliance and Research Security at exportcontrol@clemson.edu.
When submitting applications for funding, researchers must notify the Office of Export Compliance and Research Security of any information security risks. This is done via the Proposal Intake Form in InfoEd: log into InfoEd, click “Sponsored Programs” in the top left corner of the homescreen, then click the “Submit New Proposal Intake Form” button. Complete the form, including the “Information Security and Compliance” section, which notifies the research information security program office.
The policy was developed by Office of Export Compliance and Research Security in collaboration with Clemson Computing and Information Technology (CCIT).
