William Moreland was officially sworn in as Clemson University’s Fire Chief on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, capping off his first full week on the job. Moreland comes to Clemson after 30 years with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

“It is an honor to serve as the Fire Chief for Clemson University and the City of Clemson,” Moreland said during the ceremony. “I want to thank Clemson University leadership for the trust and confidence that you have placed in me. I do not take that lightly. I am honored to serve alongside the members of Clemson University Fire & EMS and to serve as your Fire Chief.”

The ceremony was kicked off with opening comments by Clemson University Vice President and Chief of Staff Alton Standifer and Associate Vice President for Public Safety Kimberly Spears-McNatt.

Lindsey Simmons, Chief Judge of Clemson University Municipal Court, then administered the oath of office for Chief Moreland:

“I, William Moreland, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully honor and perform the duties entrusted to me as Fire Chief of Clemson Fire & EMS. I will uphold the laws and policies of the State of South Carolina, Clemson University, the City of Clemson and the communities we serve.

I will carry out my responsibilities with integrity and professionalism, respect, dedication and excellence. I will lead with courage and humility, place the safety and welfare of our communities at the forefront of my decisions and treat every member of this department with fairness, dignity and respect.

I will support and develop those entrusted to my leadership, preserve the traditions of fire service, and continually work to advance the mission and future of Clemson Fire & EMS.

I accept the responsibility of this office and pledge to faithfully serve Clemson University, Clemson Fire & EMS and the community to the best of my ability, so help me God.”

Moreland was then pinned by his children and parents, before receiving his helmet and formally assuming command from Fire Marshal Kevin Christenbury, who served as Interim Chief during the transition.
