The Clemson University Police Department (CUPD) has earned the Sexual Assault Forensic Excellence (SAFE) Designation, becoming the first law enforcement agency in Pickens County to earn the recognition. CUPD joins the College of Charleston Department of Public Safety as the only other university law enforcement agency to receive the designation.
The SAFE Designation was created through a partnership between the South Carolina Victim Assistance Network (SCVAN), the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and the South Carolina Hospital Association.
The program recognizes hospitals, law enforcement agencies, EMS agencies, fire departments and advocacy centers that are committed to providing trauma-informed, survivor-centered care for victims of sexual assault, recognizing the important role that first responders play in supporting victims during traumatic situations.
While the designation requires 75% agency participation for required training, CUPD achieved 100% participation across the department. The required training focuses on trauma-informed response, evidence preservation, victim care and additional related topics.
