With more than 34 years of teaching experience, Dr. Josep “Pep” Rutllant, LV (DVM), Ph.D., brings both deep expertise and contagious enthusiasm to his role as Professor of Anatomy for the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine (PCVM). With a background spanning clinical service, research and education, Rutllant helps students see anatomy not as an isolated subject, but as the cornerstone of reasoning, problem-solving and clinical decision-making. He integrates anatomy with physiology, pathology and clinical medicine, helping students understand how structure supports function and how disease, trauma or congenital abnormalities can alter that delicate balance.

“Clemson University’s vision for the PCVM, rooted in innovation, academic excellence and service to the community, aligned with my values as an educator and academic,” said Rutllant. “I was particularly attracted to the opportunity to be part of a new institution where I can contribute meaningfully to the foundation and culture of the program and setting the tone. Clemson’s commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration, its student-centered approach and its land-grant mission aligns perfectly with my belief that veterinary education should be collaborative, rigorous and accessible. The energy and clarity of purpose I saw in the leadership made it an easy decision to join.”

Before coming to the PCVM, Rutllant served as Professor of Anatomy and Embryology and co-director of the pre-clinical curriculum at Western University College of Veterinary Medicine. His teaching philosophy centers on active engagement, challenging students to think critically and manage complex information rather than rely on memorization.

“I’m excited about contributing to a curriculum that fosters clinical reasoning, professionalism and a deep understanding of foundational sciences,” he said. “With my expertise in morphological sciences, I am looking forward to ensuring students can directly apply their anatomical knowledge in clinical practice. This is my second time being a part of a new college, and it brings the unique chance to help shape the academic and cultural identity of the program, something I consider both an honor and a responsibility.”

Rutllant’s influence extends beyond the classroom. He aims to build a learning culture where students feel both challenged and supported, one that nurtures intellectual growth as well as professional and ethical development.

“I hope to make an impact by creating a learning environment where students feel challenged, supported and inspired to grow,” he shared. “I bring with me a strong background in curriculum development, and I look forward to helping design integrated, student-focused learning experiences that connect anatomy and basic sciences with clinical relevance from the start. Additionally, I hope to serve as a mentor and collaborator across departments, supporting the college’s evolving needs as it grows and influence.”

Outside of academia, Rutllant finds balance through exploration and creativity.

“I enjoy the outdoors, hiking, snowboarding, paddle boarding, scuba diving, and I’m excited to explore the natural beauty of South Carolina,” he said. “I share my home with a very cute and demanding Vizsla named Kona, who has taught me more about behavior than any textbook ever could. I also enjoy photography, traveling, music, cooking and spending time with friends.”
