Through multidisciplinary research, this Tiger sought to understand the role of Russian propaganda in political discourse. Most recently, he made national headlines when he and his colleague, Darren Linvill, shed light on Russian propaganda campaigns carried through social media.
Meet Patrick Warren.
Title: Associate professor
Years at Clemson: 10
What I do at Clemson: I teach, advise and research political economy and the economics of organizations.
What I love about Clemson: I love the unique combination of a small town with an international-quality research university. I can bump into students and colleagues while walking my kids to school or out at dinner, and then turn around and go to a talk or performance by some of the most talented people in the world.
My defining moment at Clemson: Watching my first set of Ph.D. advisees walk across the hooding stage.
Accomplishment I’m most proud of: I’m most proud of having my work cited in congressional hearings on disinformation in social media. We gathered all the tweets produced by the Russian disinformation agency called the Internet Research Agency. We then analyzed those tweets in order to try to understand the strategies the agency pursued and what impact they had. That work is in progress, and Congress discussed some of our preliminary findings in order to urge Twitter to take the problem of disinformation more seriously.
Where I see myself in five years: Teaching, advising, and researching. Helping make Clemson a better place to do all these things. I have the best job in the world.
Last thing I watched on TV: American Vandal
Guilty pleasure: Definitely following Gamecock football, but I actually don’t feel that guilty.
One thing most people don’t know about me: Between college and graduate school, I served in the Peace Corps in Cameroon.
