Faculty members planning to retire or separate from Clemson University by August 31, 2026, are asked to take a few important steps to ensure a smooth transition of their benefits coverage.

For faculty retiring or separating over the summer

All individuals leaving the University, whether through retirement or separation, before July 1, 2026, should confirm their date of separation with their department and notify their HR Service Manager in writing no later than May 1, 2026.

Faculty who are retiring or separating employment will maintain existing insurance coverage until the last day of the month in which they separate from Clemson.

Under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), State health, dental and vision insurance, including Medical Spending Accounts, may be continued for an extended period. Details will be mailed to the faculty member’s home address following your separation.

For faculty transferring to another South Carolina agency or school district

Faculty transferring to another State of South Carolina agency or school district between May 17 and August 31, 2026, should notify their HR Service Manager of their transfer in writing by May 1, 2026.

Clemson Payroll will deduct State insurance premiums for the applicable summer months from their May 15, 2026, paycheck to allow their State insurance coverage to continue uninterrupted until coverage is transferred to the new State of South Carolina employer.

Faculty who fail to notify the Office of Human Resources of their transfer to another State of South Carolina employer will be asked to pay the applicable summer coverage premiums to Clemson when they begin employment with their new employer.

For questions, please contact your HR Service Manager or call the Office of Human Resources at 864-656-2000.
