The honorees, their professorships and departments are:

  • Kapil Chalil Madathil, the Wilfred P. Tiencken Professorship, dual appointment in the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Industrial Engineering
  • Delphine Dean, the Ron and Jane Lindsay Family Innovation Professorship, Department of Bioengineering
  • Yunyi Jia, the McQueen Quattlebaum Assistant Professorship, Department of Automotive Engineering
  • Jeremy Mercuri, the John Witherspoon Gilpin, M.D. ‘82 Endowed Associate Professorship, Department of Bioengineering

Professorships are widely regarded in higher education as a reward for good work and a vote of confidence that the recipient will continue to perform at a high level. The honors come with funds that can be spent on travel to conferences, lab equipment and other expenses related to education and research.

Each of the professorships announced today is funded by an endowment and bears the name of the donors who made the honor possible.

For administrators, the professorships are key to helping attract and retain top talent to the faculty, which then helps attract top students.

Anand Gramopadhye, dean of the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences, said the new round of professorships will help expand research and education in strategic areas, including advanced manufacturing, robotics, biomedical innovation and human-factors engineering.

“Today we are recognizing the accomplishments of four faculty members who have excelled in research, teaching and professional activities,” Gramopadhye said. “Each is receiving a professorship made possible by the generosity and continuing support of our alumni and friends of the college. I congratulate today’s honorees and wholeheartedly thank our supporters.”
