Clemson University Police Department’s Rashad Murray has been promoted to Captain of the Operations Bureau. Capt. Murray was formally promoted during the department’s latest promotion and swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, April 1.
“Rashad has distinguished himself as a leader dedicated to the professional and personal growth of our team at CUPD,” said Interim CUPD Chief Christopher Harrington. “He is passionate about serving our community and continuing partnerships that support our mission of enhancing safety, reducing risk and preventing harm.”
Murray joined CUPD in 2021, serving as Professional Development and Training Commander during his time at the University. He has over 23 combined years of experience in law enforcement and corrections and has served in previous leadership roles, including Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant and Patrol Captain. Prior to his law enforcement career, Murray served in the U.S. Army.
“His experience commanding at multiple levels and further agency-wide training and preparedness bring a continued focus on sustaining CUPD’s commitment to best practices in 21st Century Policing,” Harrington said. “We are proud of Rashad’s service to CUPD and Clemson University and look forward to his leadership and advocacy in his new role.”

His work at CUPD has supported the training and development of the CUPD team and seen the implementation of impactful initiatives, such as the Battle Buddy Program and the Vehicle on Rotation Take Home Program. Under his leadership, the Professional Development and Training Division expanded its staffing level, increased the number of subject matter instructors within the department and enhanced the department’s Police Training Officer program (PTO).
Murray was an integral part of planning and coordinating Public Safety’s 2019 full-scale exercise, which simulated a large-scale response to an active threat situation. He has supported cross-collaboration with training among Public Safety and the City of Clemson Police Department as part of the Public Safety sub-committee to the Joint City-University Advisory Board (JCUAB). His efforts to further the department’s training and preparedness have significantly supported our mission of Enhancing Safety, Reducing Risk and Preventing Harm.
Murray is a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) and most recently, graduated from the 2025 Carolina Command College.
