Clemson’s Missy Ryan Penland Named Among Top 50 Women Leaders of South Carolina for 2025​

Melissa “Missy” Ryan Penland, MPA, senior associate vice president for Development at Clemson University, has been recognized as one of the Top 50 Women Leaders of South Carolina for 2025 by Women We Admire. This prestigious honor celebrates women who are making significant contributions across the state’s key sectors, including education, philanthropy and community development.

With more than two decades of experience in higher education advancement, Penland has played a pivotal role in shaping Clemson’s fundraising strategies and donor engagement efforts. Her leadership has been instrumental in the success of the university’s ongoing $1.889 billion Fiercely Forward campaign, which aims to enhance student experiences, expand research opportunities and strengthen Clemson’s impact statewide and beyond.​

“Missy’s recognition among South Carolina’s top women leaders is incredibly well deserved, and I couldn’t be more proud of her,” said Brian O’Rourke, vice president for Advancement at Clemson University. “We are fortunate to have her as part of the Clemson Advancement team. Beyond her role at Clemson, Penland served as Chair of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) U.S. Foundation for Philanthropy from 2023-2024, where she shaped initiatives to advance philanthropic investment and impact across the sector. Her commitment to fostering a culture of giving and her strategic insights continue to inspire colleagues and peers alike.

Penland’s inclusion in the Top 50 Women Leaders of South Carolina underscores her unwavering commitment to excellence and her significant role in driving positive change through philanthropy.​
