Clemson University’s Mashrur “Ronnie” Chowdhury earns prestigious national research award

Chowdhury’s work has helped move transportation research from emerging ideas to real-world systems that are safer, more secure and more connected.

Mashrur “Ronnie” Chowdhury of Clemson University has received the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s S.S. Steinberg Award in recognition of his remarkable contributions to transportation education.

Chowdhury, the Eugene Douglas Mays Chair of Transportation, is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in intelligent transportation systems, cybersecurity, and connected and automated mobility.

He is the founding director of two U.S. Department of Transportation-sponsored centers: the National Center for Transportation Cybersecurity and Resiliency and the Center for Connected Multimodal Mobility.

Chowdhury’s work has helped move transportation research from emerging ideas to real-world systems that are safer, more secure and more connected.

He has also made significant contributions as a teacher and mentor, helping prepare the next generation of transportation professionals through his work with undergraduates, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Chowdhury’s previous honors include the White House’s Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring, the nation’s highest honor for mentoring, recognizing his outstanding contributions to developing the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

He received the 2025 IEEE Intelligence and Security Informatics (ISI) Technical Achievement Award for his technological innovations in cybersecurity and resilience for Intelligent Transportation Systems, as well as the 2026 IEEE Big Data Security Pioneer Award for his innovative contributions to the big data security of connected digital transportation and infrastructure systems. He also received the 2015 Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Wilbur Smith Distinguished Transportation Educator Award.
