Clemson University Fire & EMS honored as Fire Safe SC Community

CLEMSON — Clemson University Fire & EMS is one of 57 departments throughout the state of South Carolina that have been recognized for supporting a Fire Safe SC Community. The program emphasizes risk reduction and has awarded fire departments that are actively engaged in reducing fire-related injuries, promoting consistent messages, improving data quality and providing valuable community resources.

The award is presented in association with Fire Safe’s organizational partners: S.C. State Firefighters’ Association, the S.C. State Association of Fire Chiefs and the S.C. Fire Marshal Association. View the complete list of departments honored online.

“We are proud to be recognized alongside many great fire departments within the state of South Carolina,” said Chief Bill Daniel. “We take a lot of pride engaging and educating our campus community on important safety practices and messages.”

Clemson University Fire & EMS operates two stations, a primary location on campus at Perimeter Road and Station No. 2 at Issaqueena Trail in the City of Clemson, added in December 2017. The department provides contracted fire suppression service to the City of Clemson and adjoining areas of the University in addition to its main campus responsibilities.

Clemson officials utilize the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and its department scorecard to improve overall data quality. Several staff members have completed NFIRS end-user training, in addition to courses and quarterly trainings on fire and life safety education. Multiple staff members also attended the annual SC Fire and Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Summit in February 2020.

The department has also actively promoted fire safety and educational initiatives on campus and in the local community. The staff works closely with the ClemsonLIFE program, coordinating internships for students and hosting educational initiatives such as fire extinguisher training. They also held a smoke detector distribution and installation event with the Clemson Downs retirement community in partnership with the American Red Cross. In October 2019, the department took part in the annual Fire Prevention Week at Central/Clemson Indoor Recreation Center in cooperation with the Town of Central Fire Department.
