The College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Life Sciences (CAFLS) is currently accepting applications for funding for the 2019-2020 CAFLS Undergraduate Research Initiative.  Applications are open to individual undergraduate students working under the mentorship of a CAFLS faculty member, and those chosen will receive $500 for their mentors to use for research expenses.

Jean Bertrand, associate dean of undergraduate studies for CAFLS, established the undergraduate research initiative to help students develop their critical thinking skills and prepare them to meet their career goals.

“Very few students come to college with exposure to research and we want to make sure we give students the opportunity to explore research as a career path,” said Bertrand. “We need bright, young minds to pursue research and help solve the grand challenges related to food and the environment.”

Last year, fourteen students received funding which allowed them to pursue research in areas such as agricultural education, coastal conservation, livestock breeding, and crop pest damage.

Students funded through this program are required to participate in the CAFLS Undergraduate Research Symposium on Wednesday, April 15, 2020. Students will give a poster or oral presentation, and three participants will be chosen to win $100, $200, and $300 prizes.

The application deadline is Friday, Sept. 6, 2019. To apply click here.
