B.S. degree in Biochemistry receives prestigious accreditation

CLEMSON – The Department of Genetics and Biochemistry’s Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, one of two undergraduate degrees offered by the department, has received full seven-year accreditation by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology through Oct. 14, 2025.

“ASBMB accreditation focuses on core concepts and learning outcomes rather than specific courses or content. This allows our program the flexibility to be innovative in how we achieve those learning outcomes,” department chair William Marcotte said. “Full accreditation reinforces the fact that we are providing a quality educational experience and our students are well-trained by exceptional faculty. This accreditation by an external group that is known for its support of undergraduate education is a testament to the long-standing quality and rigor of the Clemson University B.S. degree in Biochemistry.”

Marcotte said the prestigious recognition won’t create significant changes in the degree program, but it provides potential employers and graduate programs independent confirmation of the rigor and training offered by the degree program. It will also make the program even more attractive from a recruitment perspective and provide an additional tool to use for assessment purposes.

 All students in the accredited program will have the opportunity to take an ASBMB Certification Exam that tests students’ knowledge and understanding of core competencies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Students who exhibit satisfactory performance on the exam will have demonstrated a grasp of fundamental concepts and critical reasoning skills and will have their Clemson University degree certified by the ASBMB.
