Greenville County Animal Care (Animal Care) and the Greenville Humane Society (Greenville Humane) teamed up this past weekend to help the feral cat population in the upstate and beyond! The two clinics hosted a free feral cat spay/neuter event, and the faculty and staff at the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine were happy to volunteer. Split between Friday and Saturday at Greenville Animal Care, the team helped organize and transport the feisty felines as they checked in and helped with other support tasks that day.
“We are so fortunate to have the team at Greenville County Animal Care as our neighbors and colleagues,” said Dr. Brian Butler, Associate Dean of Clinical Programs. “Whether they are animal welfare professionals or dedicated volunteers, these folks are the heart and soul of animal welfare in our region.”

The community was encouraged to trap the feral cats in their neighborhoods and bring them to either clinic to be fixed, receive vaccinations and an ear-tip (the universal symbol for a spayed/neutered outdoor cat) and have an important wellness check as well.
“What this effort does is stabilize these outdoor cat colonies,” said Dr. Staci Kehir, veterinarian and Medical Director of Greenville County Animal Care. “Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) helps to prevent the spread of illness and ensure the cats are in a healthy and happy condition.”

Between the two teams, 494 cats were spayed or neutered!
“What an incredible accomplishment, especially for our first collaborative effort of this scale,” said Dr. Kehir. “The event ran smoothly thanks to the dedication and teamwork of our staff and volunteers. We’re so grateful for this partnership and our caring community!”

The PCVM faculty and staff are proud to give back to non-profits in the area with their unique talent and time.
“Opportunities for our Clemson PCVM faculty and staff to team up with Animal Care aren’t just about professional collaboration; it’s about building a supportive family that works together to improve the lives of people and animals alike,” said Dr. Butler. “A huge thanks to our Animal Care and Greenville Humane friends for the incredible impact you make every single day for animals and people in the community!”
