Brian D. Voss, Clemson’s vice president and chief information officer, has announced plans to retire at the end of 2026 after five years of service with the University. Voss will serve the Office of the Provost in an advisory role through 2027 to ensure continuity on major University IT initiatives.
Voss was appointed to the VP/CIO position in February 2022 after interim roles in 2016-17 and 2021.
“Returning to the CIO role and finishing at Clemson has been the most rewarding experience of my 42-year career in higher education information technology leadership,” said Voss. “I will forever be grateful to the Clemson Board of Trustees, executive leadership, faculty and staff of this great University. Most especially, I’m proud to have led the CCIT staff these past five years — they are the finest in higher education.”
During Voss’ tenure at Clemson, the University modernized and secured its campus network, strengthened cybersecurity in the face of growing threats and established institutional policies to protect the integrity of its IT resources and community. His emphasis on Clemson’s cybersecurity program has built it into one of the leading higher-education programs nationwide.
Under his leadership, the Palmetto Research Computing and Data environment was revitalized and expanded, with greater investment in the “humanware” support researchers need to make the most of those resources. More recently, he has led efforts to establish groundbreaking IT capabilities that support Clemson’s AI Initiative across pedagogy, discovery and productivity.
“Brian has been an exceptional leader whose work has strengthened Clemson’s technology infrastructure and helped position our University for the future,” said Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost J. Cole Smith. “From cybersecurity to research, his impact reaches across our entire academic enterprise. I’m grateful for his leadership and his willingness to continue sharing his expertise as we build on this important work.”
Prior to this time at Clemson, Voss served multiple roles at Indiana University, eventually rising to the position of Associate Vice President. From there, he moved on to CIO roles at Louisiana State University and the University of Maryland, and served in interim CIO roles at Case Western Reserve University and Clemson. Voss returned to Indiana University in 2018 and eventually served as Executive Director of the Pervasive Technology Institute before returning to Clemson in 2021. In 2013, Voss was named the first-ever Presidential Fellow by EDUCAUSE, providing insights and developing programs to address challenges facing CIOs.
A national search for Clemson’s next Chief Information Officer will begin soon.
