Two from college receive endowed chair medallions

The 2019-20 academic year began on a high note on Aug. 19, as Amy Apon and Mark Johnson received their endowed chair medallions in Littlejohn Coliseum’s Burton Gallery. 

Apon is the C. Tycho Howle Director of the School of Computing, and Johnson is the Thomas F. Hash ‘69 SmartState Endowed Chair in Sustainable Development. 

Endowed chairs are among the most esteemed positions on Clemson’s faculty and often come with funding that helps recipients enhance research and educational offerings.

Apon took on her new role July 1, placing her at the head of a school with an enrollment of 1,083 students, double the number 10 years earlier. She previously served as the school’s chair of the Division of Computer Science. 

Apon brings to her position deep experience in leadership, high-performance computing, the federal funding process and teaching.

Johnson, who began at Clemson in summer 2018, is playing a key role in connecting Clemson faculty and students to advanced manufacturers.

He served as moderator at an October 2018 forum that brought together some of the state’s top advanced manufacturing executives and has already begun making headlines in the local press.
