Sarah Custer joined the Clemson Family in the summer of 2018 as the university’s director of emergency management.

The thought was planted in Sarah Custer’s head when she first saw the movie Pearl Harbor. It sparked an interest in joining the military and she enlisted in the United States Air Force in August 2001. She went on to spend seven years in the Air Force and deployed twice to Kuwait as an emergency management craftsman. She transitioned to civilian life as an installation emergency manager for the Naval Weapons Station, which merged and became Joint Base Charleston a few years later when she worked for both the Air Force and Navy. She joined Clemson’s team in the summer of 2018.

In the podcast, Custer speaks extensively about her experiences in the Air Force, deployments to Kuwait, managing a full-scale base evacuation in Charleston, and what her role has looked like over the past year at Clemson.
