SMART scholarship opens door for Camden Brady to return to Clemson University

Clemson University senior Camden Brady is receiving a SMART scholarship from the U.S. Department of Defense, allowing him to return to the university for a Ph.D. after receiving his bachelor’s degree.

Camden is on track to receive his Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering in May and then work a summer internship with Boeing in Everett, Washington. In the fall, Camden plans to go back to Clemson to pursue a Ph.D. in industrial engineering with Dr. Kapil Chalil Madathil as his advisor.

Camden will study how humans and artificial intelligence can form more effective teams, and he will split his time between Clemson and the Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic in Charleston.

The scholarship will cover tuition and comes with an annual stipend and guaranteed summer internships and employment after graduation.

“It’s awesome,” Camden said. “I couldn’t ask for anything else.”

Camden first became interested in engineering because math came naturally for him. He chose Clemson for its in-state tuition, National Championship football team, its proximity to home in Greer and its great engineering program.

When he crosses the graduation stage at Littlejohn Coliseum, Camden will be following in the footsteps of his mother, Beverly, who received a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Clemson, and his older sister, Cheyenne, who has a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering.

Camden has been involved in several research projects over the past year. He has helped research fatigue in drone operators and how to best get patients to fill out medical consent forms remotely. He is also helping set up a virtual reality lab at Clemson, based on a similar U.S. Army lab in Maryland.

In his free time, Camden enjoys ultimate frisbee, and he is a member of Clemson Mappers.
