Seven faculty receive inaugural Powers Fellows awards

Seven of the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business’ best have been named Powers Fellows for their exceptional performance in the classroom, as researchers and through academic service.

The program recognizing outstanding faculty was created through a portion of the generous $60 million gift presented by Wilbur O. and Ann Powers to Clemson University’s business college in 2020. The Powers Fellows recognize continued excellence in faculty performance areas of teaching, research, and academic service.

The three Emerging Fellows and four Distinguished Fellows will receive $7,500 and $30,000 per year, respectively, over the next three years. They include:

Emerging Fellows

  1. Jorge Garcia, assistant professor, John E. Walker Department of Economics
  2. Luke DeVault, assistant professor, Department of Finance
  3. Matt Hersel, assistant professor, Department of Management

Distinguished Fellows

  1. Kristin Scott, professor, Department of Management
  2. Scott Swain, associate professor, Department of Marketing
  3. Derek Dalton, professor, School of Accountancy
  4. Amy Ingram, associate professor, Department of Management

“The Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business is fortunate to have a large cast of top-notch faculty within every educational discipline,” said Dean Wendy York. “The individuals selected in this initial wave of investments in our exceptional faculty superstars demonstrate an unwavering commitment to enriching young minds through superb teaching, conducting impactful research and performing academic service for the betterment of our college.

Seven faculty have been named Powers Fellows in the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business.

“Our faculty are the backbone of creating one of the best public colleges in the country and we will continue investing in their research and teaching to elevate and retain these critical resources.”

Twenty-one faculty nominations for Fellow recognition were evaluated by a committee comprised of Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business faculty and an outside faculty member appointed by the provost. Emerging Fellows exhibited a record of distinguished accomplishment in research and either teaching or service. Distinguished Fellows exhibited a record of distinguished accomplishment in teaching, research, and service.

Members of the evaluating committee included Robin Radtke, associate professor, Accountancy; Patrick Warren, associate professor, Economics; Lucy Chernykh, Wells Fargo Professor of Banking, associate professor, Finance; Charles Tabor Weiss, associate professor, Graphic Communications; Chad Navis, Arthur M. Spiro Professor of Entrepreneurial Leadership and associate professor, Management; Ryan Mullins, J. Daniel and Nancy Garrison Professor, associate professor, Marketing; June Pilcher,  Alumni Distinguished Professor, Psychology, outside member appointed by the provost.
