Scott Husson selected as Fellow of North American Membrane Society

The North American Membrane Society (NAMS) recently has named Scott Husson a Fellow, recognizing his long-term contributions to membrane science, engineering, and professional service.

NAMS is a professional society dedicated to advancing membrane science and technology. Election as a Fellow is one of the society’s highest honors and recognizes sustained accomplishment in membrane research and practice, as well as significant service to the membrane community.

Husson, the William B. “Bill” Sturgis ’57 & Martha Elizabeth “Martha Beth” Blackmon Sturgis Endowed Chair in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Clemson University, has been an active member of NAMS for more than two decades. He served on the NAMS Board of Directors from 2010-2022, including service as Treasurer from 2012-2020 and president of the society in 2021-2022. He also co-organized the 2009 NAMS Annual Meeting in Charleston, South Carolina.

“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by colleagues in the membrane community whose work I have admired throughout my career,” Husson said. “NAMS has been an important part of my professional growth and development, from my earliest years as a faculty member through leadership roles within the society. The community has always been exceptionally collegial and supportive, and I have been fortunate to build lasting collaborations and friendships through NAMS while contributing to the advancement of membrane science and engineering.”

Husson’s research focuses on membrane separations for biotechnology, biomanufacturing, and national security applications. His group has developed membrane technologies for protein, nucleic acid, and viral vector purification, methods to improve membrane performance and reduce fouling, and membrane-based systems for radionuclide detection and environmental monitoring.

His work spans fundamental membrane science and translational process technologies.

In addition to his academic research, Husson co-founded Purilogics and served as its President for nine years before it was acquired by Donaldson Company in 2022. Through Purilogics, he helped advance membrane chromatography technologies from laboratory development to commercial implementation.

Husson has also contributed extensively to scientific publishing and professional service. He has served on the editorial boards of multiple journals in membrane science, separations, and biotechnology and has been active in mentoring students and early-career researchers throughout his career.

In addition to his leadership within NAMS, Husson served as Chair of the Separations Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and has contributed broadly to community-building efforts in membrane science and engineering.

Husson was formally recognized as a NAMS Fellow at the 2026 International Congress on Membranes and Membrane Processes in San Antonio, Texas, which ran July 18-24.
