Scott Baier appointed acting associate dean for research

Scott Baier has been appointed acting associate dean for research at the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business, effective January 2025.

Baier’s academic career began with a position at the University of Notre Dame from 1996 to 2000. From there, he joined Clemson University’s faculty in 2001 and has served as the Chair of the John E. Walker Department of Economics since 2016. In addition to his career in academia, he was appointed as a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta from 1999 to 2012. Notably, Baier served as a senior economist on the President’s Council of Economic Advisers under George W. Bush, where he provided economic analyses and contributed to the President’s Economic Report. Baier’s research has received multiple accolades, including the Bhagwati Award for the best paper in the Journal of International Economics. His research has informed trade policy and contributed significantly to public understanding of globalization and economic agreements.

Wendy York, dean of the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business, expressed enthusiasm for Baier’s new role. “Scott’s expertise and leadership will be instrumental as we continue to enhance our research initiatives across the entire College and in every discipline. His commitment to fostering collaboration and innovation will undoubtedly drive transformative impact for research initiatives within our college community.”

Jennifer Siemens, associate dean for faculty excellence, echoed the excitement surrounding Baier’s appointment, stating, “We are excited to welcome Scott into this new role. His understanding of what it takes to support business-focused research will help propel The Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business into the future and amplify our efforts to make a meaningful impact through our research efforts.”

In his new role, Baier will lead strategic initiatives to advance research within the College, aligning with the goals of the Clemson Elevate strategic plan. He emphasizes the importance of a collaborative culture in research. “I believe that by working together, we can leverage our collective expertise to be on the cutting edge of research. As a result, we will continue to provide our students with an innovative curriculum that provides them with the skills necessary to become leaders in their respective fields. Our collaborative efforts will not only strengthen our research capabilities but also create new research opportunities that cut across disciplines that reflect the dynamic nature of today’s business environment.”

Baier is eager to support faculty in their research endeavors and explore new opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. “The transformative power of business research cannot be overstated. I look forward to working closely with our faculty to expand our research efforts and create impactful outcomes that resonate locally and globally.”

The College will initiate a search for a permanent Associate Dean for Research during Baier’s acting appointment.
