Kristin Scott, professor of management at the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business, has always been interested in organizational behavior, stemming from her time as an HR manager. Since transitioning into academia, her research has focused on workplace exclusion, dysfunctional organizational behavior, employee motivation and group dynamics.

One of her more recent studies was published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, a Financial Times Top 50 journal, analyzing the role of mindfulness in the workplace.  Across two experimental studies, the researchers examined the effects of mindfulness on an employee’s willingness to perform helping behaviors, like showing initiative in the workplace. The results demonstrated a positive correlation between employee mindfulness and helping behaviors, showing the potential benefits of mindfulness training within the workplace.

In the past, Scott’s research has also been published in Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Organizational Behavior and Research in Occupational Stress and Well-Being. In 2021, Scott was awarded the Powers Distinguished Fellowship and renewed the fellowship this year in 2024. Scott is currently working on another study detailing the effects of having a hopeful mindset on the success of musicians during and post-pandemic.

During her career in academia, Scott says research at Powers College of Business has provided her opportunities to collaborate with scholars at Clemson and around the world. By utilizing different channels to communicate research, Scott and other faculty members share their insights globally.

Craig Wallace, the management department head, says that Scott’s research work and her commitment to academic excellence are impactful. “I cannot say enough about Dr. Scott – she is a world-class scholar, a fantastic instructor and a service champion. Put all of that together, and you have a leader that Clemson University is very fortunate to call one of our own.”
