After seeing the documentary Picture a Scientist about gender inequality in science last year, Lesly Temesvari envisioned an event that would spotlight women’s scholarship at Clemson.

Her idea will become a reality on March 10 at the Picture a Scholar at Clemson Symposium. The day-long symposium is part of Women’s History Month observance at Clemson and will feature 10 women scholars from across campus who will speak about their scholarship and how they promote women in their fields.

The 10 speakers represent Clemson’s colleges and include assistant, associate and full professors. Temesvari wanted to promote women’s scholarship in all fields, not just scientists and researchers.

Two guest speakers also will give their perspectives: Stephani Page, the community engagement manager for the ADVANCE Resource and Coordination (ARC) Network, part of the Women in Engineering ProActive Network; and Juanita Johnson-Bailey, director of the Institute for Women’s Studies and a professor in the Department of Lifelong Education, Administration and Policy at the University of Georgia.

Temesvari, Alumni Distinguished Professor in Biological Sciences, was chosen to be a Faculty Fellow in the Pearce Center for Professional Communication this year and decided to make the Picture a Scholar Symposium her fellow project. She hopes to make it an annual part of Women’s History Month.

“The ultimate goal of this event is to make scholarship by women visible on campus,” she said.

Along with the scholars’ talks, she wants graduate students, postdocs and interested undergraduate students to take the opportunity to network with the scholars during the symposium.

The symposium will be at the Watt Family Innovation Center. Lunch will be provided. Registration is required to attend. Register online here. The symposium will be shown via Zoom for those who cannot attend in person.

In conjunction with Picture a Scholar, Tigers Advance, one of the symposium’s sponsors, and University Libraries are making the Picture a Scientist documentary available for viewing online from February 28 to March 31. Watch the film here.

The Graduate School also will show the film at various locations on campus during the month.
