The award “recognizes outstanding contribution to the science and technology of fibrous materials by a member,” according to the society’s website. “The award is given to a professionally active scientist, regardless of age.”

Kornev, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, dedicated his award to the memory of Robert Work, who discovered super contraction of spider silk and was the pioneer of materials science of spider silks.

The award helps recognize Kornev’s contributions to materials science, which deal with fundamentals of fiber/liquid interactions and fibrous materials of insects.

The award was presented in October 2018 at the University of California, Davis.
