Joshua Summers, a professor of mechanical engineering at Clemson University, is the winner of the 2018 Kos Ishii-Toshiba Award given by the American Society for Mechanical Engineers Design for Manufacturing and the Life Cycle committee.
The award recognizes “sustained and meritorious contributions to design for manufacturing and the life cycle.”
Summers is the co-director of the CEDAR Group. CEDAR stands for Clemson Engineering Design Applications and Research.
His research has been funded by government, large industry, and small-to-medium-sized enterprises. His areas of interest include collaborative design, knowledge management, and design enabler development with the overall objective of improving design through collaboration and computation.
Summers’ work has resulted in more than 300 peer-reviewed publications. His teaching interests have resulted in the introduction of four new courses in engineering design, revamping of the senior design program, and the introduction of an international study abroad experience for senior engineers.
His research and teaching have been recognized with many awards from professional and educational organizations. One of his most recent is the Mentoring Award from the Clemson University College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences.
