CLEMSON — Victoria Graham and Ty Robinson have earned top student veteran honors for the 2018 fall semester. Brennan Beck, Clemson’s director of military and veteran engagement, made the announcement this week. Both students are part of the VA work-study program and help staff the Student Veteran Center, which opened this semester in Vickery Hall.

“I’m proud to name Victoria and Ty as our outstanding student veterans for the fall semester,” Beck said. “Both are dedicated professionals who were instrumental in transitioning the Student Veteran Center from Tillman Hall to Vickery Hall this semester. We couldn’t be happier to have them as important resources for our community of student veterans.”

Graham has logged more than 250 hours this semester as a student assistant for military and veteran engagement. She enrolled at Clemson in January 2018 following a transfer from USC Upstate. Graham is pursuing dual degrees in accounting and financial management. She hopes to be a certified financial planner and eventually work with the veteran community upon graduation. Graham is a member of Clemson’s Student Veteran Association and will serve as the organization’s treasurer in 2019.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Graham was enlisted from 2011-17. She was primarily stationed in Bremerton, Washington. She was an electrician on board the USS Nimitz. She went on a 10-month deployment in 2013 to South Korea, Thailand, Dubai, Bahrain and Italy.

“I was floored and started crying when Brennan told me I was getting one of these awards,” said Graham, a native of Mississippi. “It normally goes to our graduating veterans. Ty and I both looked at each other in disbelief. Since I’ve been here, the veteran community has kept me invested in Clemson.”

Robinson has reached 220 hours this semester as a student assistant. He enrolled at Clemson in August 2017 after four years in the U.S. Air Force. Robinson, originally from Columbia, South Carolina, is pursuing an undergraduate degree in criminal justice. He is a member of Clemson’s Student Veteran Association and will serve as the organization’s vice president in 2019.

Robinson was an engineering technician with the USAF. In his role, he provided optical and GPS surveys for airfield operations, base security and planning, emergency management and pre-design operations.

“I was not expecting this at all,” he said. “Being involved with the SVA and Student Veteran Center has definitely helped me focus better academically.”
