General John W. “Jay” Raymond, inspires future leaders 

The Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business’ mission is to graduate servant leaders who are equipped with the 21st-century skills necessary to excel in a dynamic global economy. As part of this mission, the College recently hosted Clemson alumnus and the University’s highest-ranking military graduate, General John W. “Jay” Raymond, USAF (Ret.), ’84, for an engaging leadership session with students. 

General Raymond, the inaugural Chief of Space Operations for the United States Space Force, shared “Leadership Lessons Learned“ during the one-hour session, addressing leadership-related questions from student attendees. His insights into decision-making, adaptability and integrity resonated with students eager to enhance their leadership capabilities. 

The event, hosted by the Leadership Signature Program (LSP) within the Powers College of Business, brought together students from diverse leadership areas across campus including LSP, Air Force and Army ROTC, a visiting USAF Academy cadet, student veterans, Dean’s Global Leadership Program and CECAS Engineering Leadership Minor.  

Col. Keith Balts, director of the Leadership Signature Program (LSP), reflected on the impact of the session. “Opportunities like these directly connect our students to senior leaders who have led in high-stakes environments and exemplify the mission of LSP, to cultivate mission-drive leaders charged with making a positive impact on the world.” 

Dean Wendy York echoed this sentiment, adding, “Hearing directly from accomplished leaders like General Raymond brings our leadership curriculum to life. These firsthand insights truly prepare our students to meet the challenges of the future. We are deeply grateful to General Raymond for generously sharing his time and expertise with us.”
