The Clemson University Department of Art Faculty Exhibition, “Artists Teaching : Teaching Artists,” will be on view in the Lee Gallery from August 31 – October 6, showcasing the creative research, artistic practices and educational activities of Clemson’s art and design faculty. The exhibition explores themes of place, media, technology and visual language while demonstrating how faculty members connect their research and creative work to teaching. As part of the exhibition programming, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Visual Arts Syd Cross will return to Clemson for a special artist talk on Tuesday, Sept. 1, with a pre-talk reception from 5 – 5:30 p.m. and the presentation from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Art Department Chair and Professor Valerie Zimany explains that the exhibition highlights the relationship between faculty research and teaching.
“Our faculty are practicing artists, designers and scholars whose creative research informs every aspect of their teaching,” Zimany said. “‘Artists Teaching : Teaching Artists’ offers an opportunity to experience the work happening in our studios while highlighting how creative inquiry is integrated into the educational experience for our students and the broader community.”
The exhibition presents current creative work by faculty members and provides an opportunity for students, colleagues and community members to view recent work. The featured works reflect a range of approaches to contemporary art making and represent multiple perspectives within the department.
Cross, a printmaker and educator, will discuss her recent printmaking work and her efforts to establish a community print studio in Los Angeles, CA. Cross served on Clemson’s art faculty for more than three decades and was named Alumni Distinguished Professor of Visual Arts before her retirement.
Hosted in the Lee Gallery on Clemson’s main campus, the exhibition features work by faculty members across a variety of disciplines. The exhibition provides a public forum for sharing current creative research and studio practice.
As a research institution, Clemson University supports faculty research, interdisciplinary collaboration and exploration of emerging technologies. The exhibition reflects the Department of Art’s ongoing research and creative activity.
The community is invited to attend the exhibition and related events.
Participating faculty artists include Mary Claire Becker, Kiley Brandt, Zen Cohen, John Cummings, David Donar, Mandy Ferguson, David Gerhard, Joey Manson, Todd McDonald, Alex Schechter, Drew Sisk, Kathleen Thum, Anderson Wrangle and Valerie Zimany.
“Artists Teaching : Teaching Artists” will be open to visitors from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
