World-renowned in the fields of physics, chemistry and spectroscopy, Ken Marcus’ discoveries have fueled innovations in health care, national defense, advanced materials and other industries. His fierce curiosity and commitment to excellence have led to a broad-ranging career that encompasses everything from nuclear forensics to race cars. He is a subject matter expert in nuclear safeguards and nonproliferation, analytical chemistry, biopharmaceuticals and physics. He has produced more Ph.D.’s through his research group, per capita, than nearly any other office on campus.

The animal-human bond is unique and profound. As the founding dean of Clemson’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Steven Marks, BVSc, MS, MRCVS, DACVIM is leading the effort to increase the number of veterinary clinicians and scientists to positively impact people and animals in South Carolina and beyond. Dr. Marks’ expertise is in general veterinary topics, small animal internal medicine and small animal emergency medicine.

Laine Mears is an advanced manufacturing expert within the Clemson University Department of Automotive Engineering. With nearly three decades of experience in education and industry, his work spans advanced controls for manufacturing, assembly processes, human-machine interaction, Industry 4.0 and national advanced manufacturing trends. Mears works closely with industry to integrate real-world problems into his manufacturing labs, which aim to mimic working factories with a full vehicle assembly line, and teams of multidisciplinary staff and students from all levels of the engineering spectrum at the Clemson Vehicle Assembly Center. Through Mears’ work, Clemson is on the leading edge of human-focused Industry 4.0 research through a number of projects.

Pamela Murray-Tuite explores how communities respond to disasters and the challenges of evacuation — from the timing of a warning to the infrastructure of the affected community, destination pathway and back again. She examines disasters and hazards, evacuation modeling, emergency response and resilience.

Whether you’re a new entrepreneur or an entrepreneurial CEO, securing support from influential stakeholders plays a key role in an organization’s success. Chad Navis explores stakeholder mobilization, emphasizing how an entrepreneur’s language, symbols and behaviors shape stakeholders’ reactions. A thought leader in his field, Navis connects the sensemaking dynamics between parties to outcomes such as investor funding, venture growth and the success or failure of new market categories. He also examines how these processes and results are altered when entrepreneurs exhibit high levels of overconfidence and narcissism. He’s also helped students reach professional goals, including launching national franchises, global brands and appearing on “Shark Tank.”

Thomas O’Halloran has made it his mission to decipher the “conversations” between the Earth’s surface and atmosphere to better understand how and why they are connected. Understanding those connections can lead to cleaner air and water, more sustainable and profitable options for farmers and forest landowners, and solutions to the problems of climate change. He uses an armada of high-tech equipment including drones, tall towers and a custom-made portable laboratory to learn the language of our environment.

How are ice skaters able to spin faster? How are divers able to minimize splashing? Does it matter what athletes wear in competition? Can the design and material of a shoe really help you run better, dance better? In her lectures, Amy Pope explores the physics of sports — from the science of movement to the aerodynamics of sports apparel. She demonstrates physics using athletic games and competitions and is able to break down the physics at play when fans tune into their favorite sports, including football, gymnastics, swimming, track and field, ski jumping and many more.

Mental health significantly impacts a student’s ability to focus, learn and perform academically, and early mental health support lays a strong foundation for positive personal development, participation and academic achievement. Amanda Rumsey is an advocate of prioritizing mental health in education. Her research shows mental health support helps schools create enriching environments and that broader communities benefit by schools addressing the social, emotional and mental health needs of students. Her work highlights the importance of training and skill development in areas such as trauma, suicide intervention and addiction.

Super Bowl Sunday is one of the biggest advertising days of the year and regularly draws one of the largest media audiences of any event – even viewers who aren’t sports fans. The impact of sports marketing, including advertising and sponsorship, is great both economically and culturally. As a marketing faculty member, Angeline Close Scheinbaum is a scholar of consumer behavior and integrated brand promotion with a focus in contexts of sport and e-commerce/social media. She is a widely respected, well-published pacesetter. Her work includes theoretical rigor and industry relevance and is used in many business schools and communication programs.
