Emeritus College honors Bodde and Hedetniemi with 2020 Emeritus Award for Research and Scholarship

The Emeritus College honored its 2020 Emeritus Award for Research and Scholarship recipients at a virtual ceremony on October 6.

Receiving the award were David Bodde, professor and Senior Fellow Emeritus of Automotive Engineering, CU-ICAR; and Stephen Hedetniemi, professor emeritus and chair of Computer Sciences.

The award was established by the Emeritus College Advisory Board to recognize emeritus faculty members who continue to produce extraordinary research and scholarship, either in their discipline or in a new field. The award is presented in even-numbered years.

The ceremony was led by Debra Jackson, Emeritus College director; Joel Greenstein, chair of the Emeritus College Advisory Board; and Calvin Schoulties, chair of the Awards Committee. It was attended by several University administrators, emeritus faculty and family and colleagues of the recipients.

Tanju Karanfil, vice president for research, provided the keynote address, giving an update on Clemson’s status as an R1 research institution and research projects.

“Emeritus faculty helped us to lay the grounds for a strong culture,” Karanfil said. “Because of the hard work that you have done, today we have accomplished the Carnegie R1 status. Of course, we do not stop there. We will continue to improve, but I would like to recognize the major roles that every one of you as Clemson faculty and administrators have played in that accomplishment.”
