Eight faculty members win awards from the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences

Eight faculty members from the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences received awards in a Nov. 18 celebration at the Owen Pavilion on the shores of Lake Hartwell.

The honorees’ family, friends and colleagues came together for the event, the first in-person faculty awards ceremony since 2019.

Faculty award winners in 2021 were (clockwise from top left): Eric Johnson, Shuangshuang Jin, Joshua Bostwick, Mariah Magagnotti, John Wagner, Srikanth Pilla, K.C. Wang and Gang Li.

Award winners were honored for achievements in teaching, research, collaboration and mentoring. The Junior Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching was offered for the first time.

Faculty members who received early-career awards from the National Science Foundation and Department of Energy were also recognized. Learn more about them here.

Here’s more on each award in the order in which it was presented:

Byars Prize for Excellence in Teaching Engineering Fundamentals


Winner: Mariah Magagnotti, lecturer in industrial engineering

About the award: Recognizes excellence in teaching engineering fundamentals

Murray Stokely Award


Winner: John Wagner, professor of mechanical engineering

About the award: Given to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in teaching engineering at the undergraduate and/or graduate level




Junior Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching

Winner: Shuangshuang Jin, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering

About the award: Recognizes excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level with an emphasis on the previous two years and is reserved for faculty members with fewer than seven years in higher education


McQueen Quattlebaum Faculty Achievement Award

Winner: Eric Johnson, Comporium & PalmettoNet Endowed Chair in Optoelectronics and professor of electrical and computer engineering

About the award: Recognizes faculty accomplishments in the preceding year and distinctions and awards over the past three years


Collaboration Award

Winners: Gang Li, professor of mechanical engineering, and Srikanth Pilla, Jenkins Endowed Professor of automotive engineering

About the award:
Recognizes a team of two or more faculty who have demonstrated exemplary and synergistic collaboration in research and/or teaching which has made notable contributions to the college



Junior Researcher of the Year

Winner: Joshua Bostwick, professor of mechanical engineering

About the award: Recognizes the efforts of high-achieving faculty whose work is improving society through the generation and dissemination of new knowledge.


Mentoring Award

Winner: K.C. Wang, C. Tycho Howle Chair of Collaborative Computing Environments

About the award: Honors a faculty member who goes above and beyond in enriching the faculty and student Clemson experience
