Economics Department hosting Remnant Trust collection of rare books

The John E. Walker Department of Economics is making available a world-class collection of first and early editions of manuscripts and books dealing with topics of individual dignity and liberty in their original form. These books and manuscripts date from the 1400s through the 1800s.  Attendees will be able to see and hold these antiquarian works.

“Those who attend will have hands-on access to some of the world’s great ideas in their original form,” said Brad Hobbs, clinical professor of economics in the College of Business. “I am teaching a course on the intellectual history of economics where my students are reading Adam Smith’s An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776) and The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759).  We will have first editions of both in the room.”

In addition, great works such as the Magna Carta, The Federalist Papers and writings by Aristotle, Plato, Marx, Frederick Douglass and Thomas Paine, are a few examples of the publications attendees will be able to hold, examine and discuss at the event.

Kristophor Bex, President of The Remnant Trust, will discuss the transformative nature of holding, touching and reading original works on Sept. 25, from 4:30 to 6 p.m., in 100 Lowry Hall.

Housed at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, The Remnant Trust is an educational foundation that makes its growing collection of manuscripts, first edition and early works available to colleges, universities and other organizations.
