College of Education offers certificate of online teaching

The importance of online teaching is more important now than ever. The College of Education recognizes the prevalence of online teaching and learning and is now offering a four-course Certificate of Online Teaching.

The certificate addresses foundational concepts such as instructional design and development, strategies to enhance engagement and cognition, and effectively collecting and analyzing the data needed to evaluate the learning and performance of individuals, programs and organizations.

According to Jeff Marshall, associate dean for research and graduate studies in Clemson’s College of Education, the value of the certificate is especially apparent during the current COVID-19 pandemic, when educators at all levels are required to engage students effectively using online teaching methods.

“This certificate provides a mechanism to help teachers excel with their students even when teaching needs to be in an online format,” Marshall said. “It is just another way our college is supporting communities and the state during this unprecedented time and beyond.”

The certificate is recommended for anyone interested in teaching online, including K-12 educators, faculty, graduate students and professionals leading, developing, and engaging in training and learning functions in organizations.

South Carolina teachers who successfully complete the certificate will be able to apply for a South Carolina Online Teaching Endorsement and employ the 12 credit hours in this certificate program towards the state’s outlined teacher pay increase associated with the 18+ graduate credit hours beyond a bachelor’s degree.
