Since Boll & Branch’s inception in 2014, Scott and Missy Tannen’s driving force behind the company has been to provide a high-quality product that is both ethical and sustainable. In Scott Tannen’s words, “Our difference makes a difference—so we can all sleep better at night.” Recently featured on the Met Gala red carpet, the Boll & Branch co-founders offered a unique experiential learning opportunity to Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business students. This summer, students were invited to visit the headquarters of Boll & Branch in Summit, New Jersey, to learn first-hand about the intricacies of marketing and business operations at the company.
Exploring Boll & Branch
During their visit, students were given a tour by the Tannens, where students learned about brand development, creative processes, channel strategies, e-commerce, customer analytics, brand loyalty and customer experience (CX) while even meeting Boll & Branch’s in-house creative team. The students also saw how the company uses consumer metrics and other influential factors, like product concepts, to guide the conceptualization of marketing campaigns.
Fashion meets function at the Met Gala
One of the highlights of the visit was a deep dive into a recent marketing campaign that highlighted Boll & Branch’s fabric at the Met Gala. The fabric used to create a dress for the event was simultaneously launched as a new line of sheets, demonstrating the company’s innovative and cross-functional marketing approach. The campaign featured a collaboration between Boll & Branch and renowned designer Prabal Gurung, creating a first-of-its-kind look centered around the event’s theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” for tennis legend Maria Sharapova.
An invaluable opportunity
The visit to Boll & Branch proved to be a transformative experience that allowed students to explore relevant marketing campaigns while also connecting them with the company’s team members. This opportunity allowed students to ask industry professionals about career paths and tips for entering the workforce and learn about specific roles within the marketing and entrepreneurship fields.
Wendy York, Dean of the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business expresses her gratitude towards the Boll & Branch team. “Engaging with the team at Boll & Branch was incredible. I cannot thank Founders Scott and Missy Tannen enough for the opportunity they provided for our students.”
The Clemson students will return with new insights, thanks to the Tannens and the Boll & Branch team. This unique experience not only enhanced their understanding of marketing strategies but also provided a glimpse into the workings of a successful, values-driven business.
