Clemson University officially welcomed a new accompaniment to Samuel J. Cadden Chapel on Friday, Sept. 6 with the dedication of the Johnson Family Student Memorial and Reflection Garden. Located behind the chapel, the garden area was made possible by a generous gift from Ashley Johnson ’89.
“This is a beautiful and peaceful place located in the heart of main campus,” says President Jim Clements. “This is a space that welcomes all our Tigers and gives them an opportunity to walk through, take time to sit and relax, or to pause and reflect. The garden connects people — past, present and future. It’s a space where everyone can find peace and comfort. We thank Ashley and her family for being part of this special day and for the love and support they give to Clemson.”
Clements offered remarks in front of a crowd that included members of the Board of Trustees, executive leadership, deans, faculty, staff and students. In addition to Johnson and her family, Ken and Mary Cadden — who provided the lead gift for Clemson’s chapel — attended the dedication event.
A prominent feature in the center of the garden is a large cairn, a mound of stones memorializing students who lost their lives during their time at Clemson. Guests were encouraged to add small stones to the cairn following the dedication.
Following Clements’ remarks, a cappella student group TakeNote performed a Dolly Parton original, “Light of a Clear Blue Morning.” The song’s chorus include the line “Everything’s gonna be alright, it’s gonna be okay,” fitting lyrics for a new serene space on Clemson’s campus.
“This is a place where students can pause during their hectic days, take a moment to reflect or pray, or simply take a deep breath in a calm environment,” says Kellan Fenegan, undergraduate student body president. “What a gift it is to incorporate stillness into our daily routines. Students for many years to come will find this garden a space of respite and peace.”
